You posted a photo to Flickr. You connected with a recruiter on LinkedIn. You updated your Facebook status. If you’ve done any of these, you’ve already navigated the complex ecosystem of social networking. But let’s get past the buzzwords. What actually defines these platforms? Why do they stick around while others vanish? And how did we get from dial-up bulletin boards to the algorithmic feeds we scroll through today?

The line between a “social networking site” and just another website is blurrier than marketing teams would like to admit. Internet message boards foster communities, sure. But they usually lack the rigid “friends list” structure that defines true social networking. Take Last.fm, for instance. Its primary function is tracking music habits and streaming audio. Yet, because it allows you to compare tastes, build a profile, and link to other users, it functions as a social network. The category is fluid.

The Two Non-Negotiable Rules

To understand which platforms qualify as social networking sites, you have to look at the underlying mechanics, not just the interface. According to industry standards, a site needs two specific things to earn the label.

First, users must be able to create personal profile pages. This is the digital storefront where you share information about yourself. It can be as sparse or as detailed as you want.

Second, there must be a mechanism to link users together. You need the ability to create a list of “friends” or “contacts.” These connections allow profile visibility and information sharing between nodes in the network.

Everything else—photo galleries, resume posting, music uploads—is just flavor. The core structure is the profile plus the connection. Business networking sites like LinkedIn add references to this base. Photo sites like Flickr add galleries. Music apps add streaming libraries. But without that bidirectional link, it’s just a directory, not a network.

A Brief History of Connection

The concept of online community predates the World Wide Web. Long before Facebook existed, people were using dial-up Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) like The Well to connect with like-minded individuals. These early systems lacked the polish of modern sites, but they shared the same fundamental goal: connecting people with common interests.

When the internet went mainstream in the late 90s, the first recognizable social networks emerged. They focused on reconnection. How were you connected to everyone else? Friendster launched in 2002 and became the first “big” social network. It popularized photo sharing and the “friends of friends” graph. It was fast, it was huge, and then it was gone from the US top 20.

MySpace rose from the ashes, followed by Facebook. Meanwhile, niche platforms like Bebo, Hi5, and Orkut carved out their own territories. If you were into books, or video games, or specifically wanted to meet people from Denmark, a site existed for you. The fragmentation was total.

Why Do Networks Rise and Fall?

Predicting the next viral platform is impossible. Anyone who claims they can tell you exactly why a site will boom or bust is lying. Popularity depends on a chaotic mix of features, demographics, and sheer luck. Some networks skew younger. Others dominate in regions outside the US.

Sometimes, a site fades because a competitor offers better tools. But often, it’s about the users. Specifically, it’s about who leaves first.

If a popular user or group of users migrates to a new platform, they bring their entire network with them. Friendster’s decline in the US is a perfect case study. While it lost ground domestically, it exploded in popularity in the Philippines. Why? One West Coast American user with deep ties to the Philippines switched over. Because every friend has their own friends, the ripple effect was massive. The network didn’t die; it just relocated.

This highlights why understanding how social networking sites work is less about the code and more about human behavior. The technology is just the container. The content is the traffic. And the traffic flows where the people are, not necessarily where the features are best.

The history of these sites is still being written. New applications are expanding what’s possible every day, adding layers of interaction that make it harder to disconnect. We’re building deeper webs, whether we want to or not. The question isn’t really whether these networks will last. It’s whether we’ll ever learn how to leave them.
