OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, unintentionally triggered unsettling psychological effects in some users through recent product updates. Starting in March, the company received reports from individuals claiming the chatbot fostered unusually strong connections, providing them with feelings of deep understanding and even insights into existential questions.

The Problem Emerged With Usage Increase
According to OpenAI’s chief strategy officer Jason Kwon, the first alerts came when executives began receiving “puzzling emails” from users who described ChatGPT as more insightful than any human connection. The chatbot’s behavior had shifted; it wasn’t just answering questions but actively engaging in prolonged, emotionally resonant conversations. OpenAI had been refining ChatGPT’s personality, memory, and intelligence, but a series of updates aimed at increasing usage appear to have crossed a line.
