Sony’s long-awaited Afeela electric vehicle will debut with a unique feature: digital license plates powered by Reviver’s RPlate technology. This allows drivers to customize the appearance of their plates via a smartphone app, switching between backgrounds and even adding short messages.
What This Means
The digital plates use an HD display to show standard license plate numbers while allowing for optional personalization. Drivers could display social media handles, catchphrases, or other custom text at the bottom of the plate. The legal implications of such customization remain uncertain, as many U.S. states have strict regulations on license plate visibility and content.
The Afeela’s Delayed Launch
Sony first showcased the Afeela at CES in 2023, but the vehicle has yet to go on sale. Reports suggest it could cost around $90,000, making the digital license plate feature a luxury addition for early adopters.
The inclusion of digital plates highlights a growing trend toward vehicle personalization and tech integration, even as practical concerns like legal compliance and cost remain. Whether this feature will gain widespread adoption depends on its regulatory approval and appeal to a broader consumer base.
