Microsoft Services Recover From Major Outlook and Teams Outage

Microsoft’s core productivity tools, including Outlook, Teams, and Microsoft 365, experienced a widespread outage on Thursday, impacting users across North and South America, as well as Japan. The company confirmed the disruption via its Microsoft 365 Status account on X (formerly Twitter), with full recovery reported overnight into Friday.

Widespread Impact and Recovery Efforts

The outage, which began escalating around 11:00 AM PT on Thursday, affected nearly 350,000 users according to Downdetector, a site-monitoring service owned by Ziff Davis (the same parent company as CNET). Users in the US, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Japan reported issues accessing email, collaboration tools, and even other Microsoft services like Azure and the Microsoft Store.

Microsoft stated that access to affected services was restored, with mail flow stabilizing, but acknowledged ongoing efforts to address remaining issues. As of Friday morning, some users continued to report intermittent problems.

A Growing Trend of Cloud Service Disruptions

This incident highlights a growing concern: the increasing reliance on cloud-based services and their vulnerability to outages. Major disruptions are becoming more frequent, with similar incidents impacting Google Workspace, Cloudflare, Amazon Web Services, and even Verizon Wireless in recent months. These events underscore the fragility of modern digital infrastructure, where even short service interruptions can significantly disrupt work and personal lives.

“Outages of online services, even short ones, can have a significant impact, given how heavily people’s work and personal lives depend on access to the internet.”

Cause Remains Unclear

Microsoft has yet to publicly explain the root cause of this week’s failure, describing it only as a “service functionality issue” in a statement to CNET. While the company has declared all products operational as of Friday, the incident serves as a reminder that even the largest tech corporations are susceptible to disruptions.

To stay informed about Microsoft service status, users can monitor the official Microsoft 365 Status account on X and the Microsoft Service Health Status page. The recurrence of these outages raises questions about infrastructure resilience and the need for improved redundancy in critical cloud services.
