Apple’s recent iPhone 17 release and iOS 26 update missed an opportunity to integrate a crucial feature for verifying image authenticity—something Google has already implemented in its Pixel 10 line. As AI-generated images become increasingly prevalent, distinguishing between real and fake content is more important than ever.
Google’s Pixel 10 phones now include C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) content credentials, a low-level but significant feature designed to identify whether an image has been created or altered using artificial intelligence. This addresses the growing problem of AI-driven misinformation, a challenge that has accelerated alongside rapid advancements in generative AI technology.
How C2PA Works
C2PA, initially founded by Adobe, tags media with metadata indicating if it’s AI-generated or edited. Google is a member of this coalition. Every image captured on the Pixel 10 camera includes C2PA data, and even edits made in the Google Photos app are flagged as being AI-assisted.
Users can access this information by swiping up on an image in Google Photos, where a new “How this was made” section displays whether the image was captured with a camera or modified with AI tools. The system isn’t perfect—some AI-generated content still slips through the cracks—but the core function remains intact: providing verifiable provenance for digital media.
Why Apple Should Act
Apple, despite selling millions of iPhones, the world’s most popular image-making devices, is not currently part of the C2PA coalition. This is a missed opportunity to shape public trust in digital content. The company could implement C2PA in its iPhone 17 cameras, adding a layer of transparency to a market flooded with potentially misleading images.
Google’s approach is more ambitious: tagging every photo with C2PA data, regardless of whether AI was used. The goal isn’t just to flag edited images, but to normalize the expectation of verifiable provenance. As Isaac Reynolds, Google’s Pixel camera product manager, stated, the intention is to “flood the market with this label so people start to expect the data to be there.”
