Navigating the Outdoors: How to Create Custom Hiking Routes with iOS 18

As spring arrives, many outdoor enthusiasts are looking to trade indoor activities for hiking trails and nature walks. While exploring new terrain is rewarding, it also carries the risk of getting lost or losing signal in remote areas.

With the release of iOS 18, Apple has introduced significant enhancements to the Maps app, turning the iPhone into a much more capable tool for hikers, runners, and walkers. You can now design specific paths and, crucially, download them for offline use—a vital feature when venturing into areas with poor cellular reception.

How to Design Your Custom Trail

Unlike standard driving directions, which are dictated by roads, the new custom route feature allows you to plot a specific path through landmarks, intersections, or even unmarked spots on a map.

Follow these steps to build your route:

  1. Open Apple Maps on your iPhone.
  2. Set your starting point: Either tap the blue dot representing your current location or long-press on the map to drop a pin where you want to begin.
  3. Access the menu: Tap the three dots (…) located at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Select “Create a Custom Route”: This opens the planning interface.
  5. Plot your path: Tap various points on the map—such as trailheads, landmarks, or specific intersections—to build your journey.

Note: Even if you tap a location miles away, Apple Maps will intelligently calculate a path that follows existing trails or paths rather than suggesting impossible shortcuts through buildings or obstacles.

Choosing Your Journey Style

Once you have mapped out your points, Apple Maps offers three distinct ways to structure your trip:

  • Reverse: Flips the direction of your route, making your destination the starting point.
  • Out & Back: Maps a path that follows the same route both ways, ensuring you return exactly where you started.
  • Close Loop: Creates a circular route that ends at your original starting point via a different path.

Essential Step: Saving for Offline Use

The most important feature for hikers is the ability to use maps without a data connection. Once your route is designed, tap “Save Route” and give it a name.

By saving the route, Apple Maps automatically downloads the necessary data to your device. This ensures that even if you lose signal deep in the woods, your GPS and map data remain functional, providing you with distance tracking and elevation details.

How to Retrieve Your Saved Routes

When you are ready to head out, you can quickly find your planned adventures by following this path:

  1. Open Maps.
  2. Tap your Profile Icon (next to the search bar).
  3. Select Places, then tap Routes.
  4. Choose your saved route to view it on the map.

Pro Tip: If you are already at the trailhead, tap “Go” to begin turn-by-turn directions. If you are still traveling to the area, tap “Directions” to get navigation to the start of your hike.

Summary: By utilizing the custom route features in iOS 18, hikers can create precise, offline-capable maps that provide essential data like elevation and distance, ensuring a safer and more organized outdoor experience.
