Apple isn’t just building hardware. It is wrestling with its own reputation.
The company has delayed its debut smart glasses. According to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, the launch window has shifted. What was once slated for early 2027 is now targeting a WWDC reveal in June of that year. Customers likely won’t hold a pair until late 2027.
Why the wait? It isn’t just engineering. It is messaging. Specifically, privacy.
Apple sees the backlash surrounding competitors. Meta’s smart glasses have been labeled “pervert glasses.” Not a flattering tag. Users are capturing non-consensual video. That creates a public relations nightmare.
Apple markets privacy as a core feature. This creates a contradiction.
If Apple enters the market with devices that feel invasive, the brand cracks. The delay gives the company breathing room. It allows Apple to solve the recording issue. More importantly, it allows them to define the narrative before the product lands.
Gurman’s reporting suggests Apple is paying close attention to these social implications. The tech giant knows it cannot ignore the ethical implications of always-on cameras.
So, when can you buy them? Look for the June 2027 announcement. Expect availability by December 2027.
Does Apple have the moral authority to fix this? Or is the hardware too intrusive regardless of the software?
We’ll see.
